As you can see, the fuss is warranted: gorgeous ladies gorgeously photographed - the way I like it.

Over in the beauty pageant world, the gloves — and some of the clothes — have come off. The Miss USA contest is under fire for posting racy lingerie photos of its current crop of contestants.

In a bedroom-inspired, black-and-white shoot, the 51 models — representing the 50 states and Washington D.C. — lounge about in open button-downs and suggestive underthings. Miss South Carolina, Rachel Law, poses in a white corset top, while Bethany Gerber as Miss Kansas wears nothing but a men's dress shirt barely held in place.

The sexy pics were part of a shoot titled "Waking Up in Vegas" and are displayed on the Miss USA website's contestants page, which is meant to introduce this year's hopefuls. It's a pretty big departure from the traditional method of introducing beauty pageant contenders (or anyone, for that matter).

Choose subjects you’re passionate about. I decided I wanted to shoot motorsports when I was a teenager.

Don’t be afraid to experiment in order to stand out from the crowd. Your work has to stand out.

Follow your passion. You’ll do best shooting what you love, and I see this with my students.

Never stop learning about the endless subtleties of light.

Don’t follow trends or copy other people’s work.

Think about creating images that look fantastic straight out of the camera, without relying on post-processing Photoshop enhancements.

Choose your times – photograph at first and last light.

Always look for colour and how best to capture it.

Listen to your inner voice... it’s usually right about everything.

Try to travel light. This will encourage you to always take a camera out and about with you..

Learn to shoot against the light because this will give you the most atmospheric shots.

You need to know when it’s the perfect time to take the shot. I try to use only natural light and avoid heavy digital enhancement.

1. Make sure people aren’t smiling. Otherwise you end up with a snapshot.

2. Move in closer when you’re taking people shots.

4. Then make sure people aren’t smiling again. This is the biggest error in portraits taken by amateurs.

5. For candid shots, just keep persevering. Your luck will come in the end.

Be engaged with your subject, but at the same time be considerate – you are the guest.

Think about combining the composition of the shot with the context of where you’re taking it. The two shouldn’t be separated.

For my kind of work, I try to use natural light wherever possible. It’s more natural!

Ask permission to get in close.

As an adult, I can nod enthusiastically during dinner parties while my fellow guests discuss their favorite record sleeves of all time. I can go out and waste money on books that claim to list the top record sleeves of all time.

But I’ll know my favorite record sleeve of all time when I see it, and it will be this one. This sleeve is life itself.

On the front, beautiful singer Róisín Murphy wobbles drunkenly, thuggishly, threateningly before me. She holds those two pints of beer and looks like she’s going to hurl them in my face, simply for being cheeky enough to look at her. She’s snarling, aggressive, soaking wet. Not, um, wearing a bra.

And she doesn’t care. She gives not a flying fuck what I think, what you think, what anybody thinks, because she is having the time of her life larking about in freezing cold seawater with her mates.

Did the band ask photographer Elaine Constantine to do a shoot while they larked on a beach?

The show's producer, Peter Chinn, used a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and tiny cameras to capture the process from conception to birth. These long, crazy-looking clouds can grow to be 600 miles long and can move at up to 35 miles per hour, causing problems for aircraft even on windless days.

Known as Morning Glory clouds, they appear every fall over Burketown, Queensland, Australia, a remote town with fewer than 200 residents. A small number of pilots and tourists travel there each year in hopes of “cloud surfing” with the mysterious phenomenon.

Similar tubular shaped clouds called roll clouds appear in various places around the globe. But nobody has yet figured out what causes the Morning Glory clouds.

This shot was captured by photographer Mick Petroff from his plane near Australia’s Gulf of Carpenteria.

In the past 15 months, Usain Bolt has won three Olympic golds, a world championship and set four world records. But tonight may been his most impressive feat yet.

The Jamaican sprint star shattered his own world record in the 200m at the world track and field championships in Berlin, running a scintillating 19.19 and besting the second place finisher by over six-tenths of a second. His old record, set in Beijing, was 19.30.

Few people (including myself) thought Bolt had a realistic chance of setting a world record tonight, as his run in Beijing was widely considered a "perfect race". Coupled with the fact that Bolt's turns have been less than stellar this season, and it was assumed he'd win the race with ease, but just off his Beijing pace.

Instead, Bolt burst out of the blocks, had a five-meter lead at the midway point and then accelerated down the stretch for yet another dominating victory.

It may look weird that while making you more energetic and excited, this color also makes you more productive and attentive to details. This phenomenon is explained the following way:

“When you feel that the situation you are in is problematic,” said Norbert Schwarz, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, “you are more likely to pay attention to detail, which helps you with processing tasks but interferes with creative types of things.”

By contrast, when people are calm, balanced and in a happy mood, they are more creative and less analytic. Hence if you need to get more creative, blue is the right choice for you. Blue also suppresses appetite, so if you have bad time concentrating because of the frequent breaks for some snacks, surround yourself with blue and you will get more organized.

Thousands of mourners will bring the cathedral city of Wells in Somerset to a standstill today for the funeral of Harry Patch, who was the last surviving soldier to fight in the trenches in the first world war.

Visitors from across Europe will line the streets as Patch's coffin is taken from the care home where he spent his final years to the cathedral.

Patch was known for his stance against war, and yesterday Radiohead premiered a song written as a tribute to this, with Patch's own words as lyrics.

He died on Saturday 25 July, aged 111, at the Fletcher House care home. The death of the only man who could talk from experience about the horrors of Passchendaele prompted Gordon Brown to announce a national memorial service at Westminster Abbey for those who served in the first world war.

Afterwards a bugler from the Rifles will sound the Last Post before the bells sound 111 times, one ring for every year of Patch's life.

230 sets of twins in the Indian town of Kodinji - but what's causing it

Scientists are still trying to uncover the mystery of why there are so many twins in the village.

"Based on scientific facts, we feel something in the environment is causing this. It could be something in the water," said a local doctor, M.K. Sribiju.

"All the world over the cause of twins is mainly because of drugs. Everywhere in the Western world, people are exposed to fertility drugs, their food habits, they consume more dairy products. Everywhere the age of marriage is increasing. There are late marriages predisposed to occurrence of twins," he said.

However in Kodinji, most marriages are between people aged 18 to 20 years old.

"All the factors leading to the occurrence of twinning world wide, we cannot see it here. There is something unknown that is causing this phenomenon," he said.

Walk around Kodinji village and you'll think that you have double vision.

The village is home to as many as 230 sets of twins. Nobody knows why there are so many twins in the village of 15,000 people, although one local doctor suspects it might be due to the water.

In fact with about 35-45 twins per live birth, this village in North Kerala, India, has four times more twins than normal. Not surprisingly, the village has been dubbed "the twin village."

Based on births since the survey was conducted, there are probably now around 230 sets of twins in the village, locals said. That number is set to rise as there are five women pregnant with twins.

"It's an amazing phenomenon to see a medical marvel occurring in such a localized place where the people are not exposed to any kinds of harmful drugs or harmful chemicals. It's a virgin village," said Dr Sribiju, a researcher.

How to know a good photographer from a bad one, and why not just have mom or a friend shoot some shots for you?

SHOOT: It's simple. Good photographer's are perfectionists, with an eye for detail, and a quick, sometimes impulsive, sometimes far sighted sense of vision. They will patiently explore a variety of options before finding their perfect picture. There is a process involved, and they have a natural (sometimes learned) sense of proportion, perspective, context, light and texture. If you're a perfectionist and you want good work, get a professional. You'll recognise a professional by their previous work, their fee and their style.

Wolf Kettler.co.uk: No self-respecting photographer wants to release photos that are anything but perfect. From a large number of photographs taken during a shoot, only a few will meet the demanding criteria a photographer should impose on himself (or herself). Many photos from a shoot are just not good enough for a variety of reasons - technically, compositionally, pose-wise.

I know of people who think that just because a photograph is in focus and correctly exposed, it is a good photograph. Bless 'em.

If you are offered a copy of everything, you are working with a photographer who does not take (or does not know how to take) pride in his or her work. Not a good idea!

Aspiring models often believe that it is really attractive to receive a large number of images immediately after the shoot. Think again! Only the very inexperienced or the extremely naïve assume that it is a seductive proposal by default. In a portfolio, you want quality, not quantity.

There are some pitfalls that you want to watch out for:

It is not in your interest to receive a copy of every photograph taken. The photographer should take the time to edit the photos and only give you a selection of the best. You do not have the expertise to select the right images from a large collection.

Digital or print, a good photograph requires work after it has been taken - and I don't mean digital trickery on a mediocre picture. If you are presented with a CD immediately after the shoot, the photographer has not had the time to do any post-production work on the images (or could not be bothered or did not know how to).

Brief Background
I have a day job, thank goodness because some days on the craft market scene you sell absolutely nothing. Jealous of my brother's success as a professional fine artist [visit http://www.caseyvdleek.com/] and convinced I had oodles of natural talent carried down from great grandpa Tinus de Jongh, I thought selling my work would be a snip. It's damn hard work, lots of graft, lots of behind the scenes schlepp. The photography is the easy part.

I source my frames using teak and weathered oregon pine. I also use black classic frames for a more classy 'office'-type style. I can provide frames to order. Simply email me your preferred size and specifications and I'll provide you with a very reasonable quote. My frames retail for between R120 for small to R500 for bigger frames, depending on wood and other specifications.

SHOOT: There's something Titanic-ish about this. That no one can imagine that an airbus filled with passengers might not be able to fly across the Atlantic. Because we simply expect that it will, that it should. I think we're guilty more and more of Great Expectations, and as our troubles unfold, and as we continue to be distracted and indecisive and remnain locked in lifestyles of consumer laziness, we're due to see a lot of disappointment - like this - in the face of our Great Great Expectations.

Time and real estate were running out and Di Luca knew it. With 26-seconds to make up he had to attack or be content to sit in second place. But not knowing the word “quit,” the tenacious Italian attacked but Menchov was quickly on his wheel. Basso broke away again, soon followed by Sastre, while Gilberto Simoni (Serramenti-Diquigiovanni) and Garzelli attacked too. Lance Armstrong, Levi Leipheimer, and Dani Navarro were all with the Maglia Rosa group, and just behind were Yaroslav Popovych and Jani Brajkovic.

At 5km to go Sastre left Basso and headed for the home stretch, while behind them the race blew apart. Pellizotti bridged up to teammate Basso but kept riding past in order to secure the bonus points for second place and keep his podium position ahead of Sastre. Di Luca continued to attack over and over, but Menchov responded each and every time, patiently marking the Italian rider and finishing just behind him in 4th, the race lead still his since the time trial on stage 12.

SHOOT: The Giro guys had a rest day today which means they didn't kill themselves on the bike racing, but still went out for a ride. Lance is kitted out in Livestrong gear fingertips to toe. Looks kinda warm but he may be wearing some of those muscle stabilising materials for all I know.

Little bloating after a big meal is an occupational hazard for pythons. But this unfortunate creature found itself unable to slink away and sleep it off.

In fact, after swallowing a pregnant sheep, it couldn't move at all.

Firemen in the Malaysian village of Kampung Jabor, about 190km east of Kuala Lumpur, easily caught it after it was spotted on a road.

Conservationists were yesterday still deciding whether to keep the 90kg snake in a zoo or release it back into the wild.
